Performance Testing

Structured testing is the engine of RS Performance Index

Every result is captured with full provenance — tester, method, equipment, conditions and session — creating a verified, comparable record that stands up to scrutiny.

What is RSPI performance testing?

RSPI performance testing is a structured, standardised assessment of the physical and technical qualities that matter for rugby performance. Rather than ad-hoc estimates, every test follows a defined protocol with recorded equipment, method and conditions — so results are comparable across athletes, sessions and time.

Testing is the data collection engine. Raw results are the permanent source of truth. Everything else — scores, indices, percentiles, development tracking — is an interpretation layer built on top of verified measurements.

Performance qualities assessed

Speed

10m, 20m and 40m sprint times measured from a stationary start.

Agility

5-0-5 change of direction test assessing lateral quickness and body control.

Power

Vertical and broad jumps measuring explosive lower-body power.

Endurance

Bronco Test and Yo-Yo IR1 assessing repeated high-intensity capacity.

Rugby Skills

Standardised Passing, Handling, Kicking, Tackle Technique and Decision Making assessments.

How testing days work

01

Book a Session

Schools, clubs or individual athletes arrange a testing session at a suitable venue.

02

Athletes Test

Athletes complete the standardised test battery under controlled conditions with authorised testers.

03

Results Captured

Every result is recorded field-side with full provenance — tester, method, equipment and conditions.

04

Verification

Results are reviewed and verified through the RSPI verification process.

05

Performance Profile

Verified results enter the athlete's longitudinal performance profile, building a development record.

06

Repeat Testing

Return for follow-up sessions to track development across seasons and testing cycles.

How results are captured

Field Testing Mode lets testers capture results efficiently beside a rugby field. Large touch targets, automatic unit display and rapid athlete-to-athlete navigation make it practical for real testing days.

  • Best valid trial automatically calculated
  • Trials stored alongside the final result
  • Tester, session and equipment recorded with every result
  • Results marked as pending verification until reviewed

Testing equipment

Electronic timing gates (preferred for sprints and agility)
Manual stopwatches (where electronic timing unavailable)
Jump mat or measuring device (vertical jump)
Measuring tape (broad jump)
Audio signal and cones (Yo-Yo IR1, Bronco Test)
Standardised rugby balls (skill assessments)

What athletes receive

Performance Profile

A longitudinal record of every testing session, with results and development trends.

Verified Results

Results verified through the RSPI process carry verification status and full provenance.

Development Tracking

Compare current results against previous sessions and track progress over time.

Talent Visibility

With consent, verified profiles are visible to authorised scouts and organisations.
